40k Heavy Gears Inbound

I've had visions of Armored Cores, Mechas and Heavy Gears running around my head for the past week. Let me get this strait, I hate the GW Tau models but they are the closest thing to the anime-like models I want to create. That said, I picked up the Tau codex today along with 2x Crisis suits. After several hours on the web, and reviewing a few hundred conversions, I've discovered an excellent Crisis suit design I'm going to shoot for. It's going to involve a rash of bits buying and a ridiculous amount of plastic surgery but I think the end result will be well worth it. I'll need about 12 but after I get a few of these guys pushed out I'll have to look at troops. I hate the fish headed Fire Warrior and their spindly legs... that means I'll have to figure out a suitable IG conversion for 4x squads of around 10 dudes. I've been eyeing the Death Korps of Krieg models because they have trench coats and I can see an amazing conversion based on the image you'll see below... kind of like the Grammaton Cleric from Equilibrium. I was thinking they wouldn't have standard rank and file appearance considering they are either a resistance force or pirates. Barring that, I may have to settle for the same old boring Tau Auxiliary conversions that litter Google image searches... Cadian/Firewarrior crossovers.  More to follow of course.

Regarding the background fluff, their story line is going to be either an insurgency on a Tau world or space faring void pirates, both of which are adept at stealing and manipulating Tau technology. Hell, I may have both groups be part of the same tribe/army/sect... whatever I end up calling their organization. Come to think of it, that also makes them ripe to have an Ordo: Xenos Inquisitor as an ally... but that is way way down the line. Stay tuned for the first conversion post which will begin after tomorrow's day of 1850 pt warfare. Woot!!!!

  1. Acknowledged..... and processing..... not sure what to think. Where'd the inspiration come from?

Got an email that said a GW store is openning at laskin. I might get down there to check it out.

  2. JOEL!!! Glad to see you back online!

The inspiration for an alternative Tau army was a combination of researching new table top game types and my special affinity for the cyberpunk genre. Rather than try to find groups that play games like Infinity , Mercs or even Shadowrun, I figured I would bring the concept onto my own table in the form of a 40k army. The closest race that could align to something like the cyborgs from Syndicate or mecha from Ghost in the Shell would be Tau. One of the things I'm hung up on is if should I use Tau bits in the first place. I guess that would make it easy for normal 40k players to identify certain weapons on the models and know the specific threat they pose with out asking. Once I finish painting this damn Land Raiser I'll start the conversion process.

Your thoughts on the matter are most welcome!

  3. Placed an order on EBay for a bunch of bits. Hopefully conversions can begin as early as Tuesday (22Jan'13).
