"Build me an army worthy of Mordor." |
For several years now Madwars has been urging me to jump into the world of 40k and miniatures. We've dabbled in a few role-playing games such as Dark Heresy and Pathfinder before but a strong devotion to my comic book collection was taking up much of my spare time and money and I wasn't quite ready for a life in the Imperium or devoting all my time to the Emperor.
With the retirement of my comic collection a few years ago and no new hobby to replace it I'd been looking for something new to sink my teeth into. I'd had a bit of experience building traditional models during my younger days but miniatures were entirely new to me and I wasn't sure if I'd like them, but what the hell, I wouldn't know until I gave it a try. I had heard that Games Workshop had a line of Lord of the Rings miniatures and since I'm a lot more familiar with Tolkien's material I headed over to the local gaming store,
Pair of Dice Games, picked up an goblin starter kit, grabbed a six-pack of beer and began my quest.

Primed with layer 1 of armor |
It's been slow going but I got my first twelve Moria goblins primed and layer one of their armor painted on in just under a week. I realize that I have much to learn. I could probably go faster but I typically let them sit overnight once I get a layer painted. I'm also not sure what the best practices for keeping brushes in good working order.
I'm enjoying it so far but I don't know how long I'll keep painting LOTR miniatures since I don't know anyone else who paints/plays. So I went out and picked up a Space Marine starter kit as I'm sure it will appease the Emperor and I also look at as a future investment toward my friendship with Madwars.

Project number 2 |
Hey Sean! So happy to see that you've taken up the brush. I also see you have already made the necessary connection of beer plus painting to make for an enjoyable and relaxing evening.
ReplyDeleteAnyways, painting is a bit like working out. The more you do it the better you get at it, so if you find yourself discouraged in the first month or so try to push through it. I'll try to add blog that has a list of modeling and painting techniques we've picked up over the years...

How was progress last night?
ReplyDeleteYour motivation has turned "the eye" back upon the devilry that is GW. I will continue my 15mm side project but will join you in your new endeavors...
Recommend batch painting no more than 5x at a time. I normally start with 5x models and once all of the base colors are applied I focus on highlighting one model for several hours (until completion). We all have our different quirks though. For some armies, the ones where you field over a hundred models (Orkc, Nids, IG), batch painting is probably the best way to go until you get to vehicles and HQ. You'll want some of your units to be better painted than the rest, unless you are super anal like me (and it is not/not fun at all to be an anal painter). Anyways, the paint dries pretty quickly... 5x minutes tops, unless you're using washes (those take a bit more, sometimes an hour or two).
What color will the orcs' skin be? Any ideas on what space marine chapter colors you'll use on the marines? (Just curious on your ideas)
Being able to blog out your creations and artistry will actually create a turbine of motivation for everyone to start production and painting. I imagine you'll hear from Joel or Ryan shortly...
Excellent! I cannot wait to see the battles that will soon begin. In the C'tan god's eyes, they see a new disturbance that will rise up...
ReplyDeleteI did a little bit of work yesterday and touched up the armor. I think I applied a layer of wash (I think that's what you call it).
ReplyDeleteI was just going to paint the Space Marines according to the instructions just to get a feel for it.
Welcome to your new addiction. They call it plastic crack but I still haven't figured out how to fit them in my pipe.
ReplyDeleteYeah, you can interpret that anyway you want to.
