After many days of meditation, I've put the new 40k 6th edition rule book down. Don't get me wrong, I'll still play of course and give the 20% life-tithe to the GW gods. However, I can't help but think there's something better out there. This heretical thought occurred on an idle day of work. I started feverishly searching for other wargames that might compare to the last 10 years of GW games I've participated in. I've found DUST tactics, Mercs, Warmachine, Flames of War, Dark Age and Infinity to be the major competitors of late. On sheer chance I ran across a rules set called Tomorrow's War. It's based on Osprey's Force-on-Force modern warfare rule set and has ALOT of potential!
I pause here because as I was about to break out the new Tomorrow's World game system but I am struck by the massive effectiveness of all the others I reviewed. Special dice, fog of war decks, special abilities, campaign playability... all are very important. After game system is determined, the next question to ask is 15mm or 28mm?
I don't have any of the answers just yet. All I know is I want a system that does the following (in stream of conscious fashion):
1. Has well crafted miniatures
2. Will not fold in a couple of years leaving me with no where to spend my hard earned dollars
3. Is futuristic
4. Is expandable
5. Has a decent set of rules that I agree with as relatively believable and not nearly as complex as 40k
Thoughts?
